Known as Tridentum by the Romans and the city of the Council of Trent from the 16th century, Trento is the perfect combination of Italian and Central European cultures. A fine example of this is the wonderful Cathedral, which is Romanesque on the outside and Gothic inside. Trento is a very livable city that is both urban and alpine, elegant and sporty, lively and quiet. There are wonderful stone castles, Renaissance fountains, medieval porticos and frescoes, and contemporary museums to be discovered here. Nature has done the rest when it comes to complementing the city’s artistic and cultural heritage. The backdrop of Adige River and the Brenta Dolomites provide not only beautiful landscapes but fine food and wine. The hills lined with expanses of vineyards produce excellent grappa and high-quality sparkling wines made with the Trentodoc Traditional Method. The companies in the Trentino wine sector include Ferrari Trento, a world-renowned name and crown jewel of Italian wine production. Founded in 1902, it is now an institution among sparkling wines and used to celebrate the most important sporting events.

Tour of the Ferrari Trento cellars

Ferrari Trento was established in 1902 thanks to the insight of Giulio Ferrari, legendary pioneer of the Metodo Classico who contributed to the distribution of Chardonnay throughout Italy. Fifty years later, the winery was taken over by Bruno Lunelli who followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, and carried on the meticulous work in the vineyard and the cellar. In his continuous quest for excellence, he increased production and turned the winery into a global reference point. Today, the third generation of the Lunelli family continues to produce wine with the same values that inspired Giulio Ferrari and Bruno Lunelli. Their wine is produced exclusively with the Metodo Classico, using grapes sourced at altitude in Trentino and adhering strictly to the Trentinodoc guidelines. Another essential factor is the company’s commitment to sustainability and protecting both the environment and the well-being of the vineyard workers. It is thanks to this commitment that, in 2017, the company was awarded organic certification for all their vineyards. Visiting Ferrari’s cellars is a full immersion in the history and production tradition of the brand: visitors venture through an underground maze, past ancient tools and millions of bottles. The tour continues in Villa Margon, the winery’s head office, located in a 16th century building that has been beautifully restored and contains exquisite frescos.

Ferrari Trento on the podium

Quality, professionalism and dedication to the local area have led this sparkling wine company to make a name for itself on the international market, so much so that the brand has often been chosen to celebrate major sporting events. From World Cup races and the Alpine Skiing World Championships to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics (with Alberto Tomba’s outstanding victory) and the ones held in Pyeongchang in 2018. In football, it was used to toast to the victory of the Spanish team at the World Cup in 1982 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid and, since 2016, it has been a partner of Juventus. In 2016, Ferrari Trento was once again on the podium at the Rio Olympics and the Italian Golf Open. It was present at the Internazionali tennis tournament in Rome in 2019 won by Rafael Nadal. And again, during the regattas of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli boat which beat British team Ineos in the PRADA Cup in Auckland, a race to gain access to the final of the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada against New Zealand.

Lastly, in 2021, Ferrari Trento celebrated a memorable milestone when it was chosen as the official toast of Formula 1 for three seasons. This will make it the first Italian sparkling wine to appear on the podium of all the Grand Prix races of the World Championship.
