The Historical Archive of the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia was established in 1986 with the institutional purpose of conserving, reconstructing and enhancing the Institute’s documentation. The history of the Archive is a living history: the story of women and men who worked on the great encyclopedic project; choral history, related to individual stories, to the personal inclinations of those who, from the very beginning, have worked with passions in the Encyclopedia.

On 19 December 1988 it was declared a place with historical interest by the Archival Superintendency for Lazio of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and the entire Archive has been placed under the supervision of the State as a precious source for the history of Italian culture.

It preserves sources relating to the entire 20th century, with sporadic documentation from the previous century. The archive’s collections produced by the Institute’s activity – divided into institutional, managerial, editorial – are flanked by archives of people, presidents of the Institute and directors of disciplinary sections, or personalities who had relationships of scientific collaboration and not with Treccani.

Even today, the Archive supports the editorial and cultural activities of the Institute.
